Its roots trace back to 15th century Venice, Italy, where workers repurposed marble scraps for terraces (hence the Italian word "terrazzo"). The process involves mixing materials with a binder, pouring the mixture into a mold or directly onto a surface, then grinding and polishing for a smooth finish.
Terrazzo boasts durability, making it ideal for high-traffic areas like airports and hospitals. With proper care, terrazzo flooring can last for decades and can be refinished if worn. For countertops, terrazzo is fairly heat-resistant but may require sealing to prevent staining. Maintenance varies based on the manufacturer and materials used, but regular cleaning with soap and water is typically sufficient.
Pricing varies depending on factors like material type and installation method. Terrazzo countertops can cost around $4,000 for 30 square feet, while flooring ranges from $9 to $35 per square foot.
