Exploring the Impact of Flooring Changes on Spatial Perception

In the realm of modern design, designers and architects have an expansive array of high-performance flooring options at their disposal. Ranging from conventional choices like wood, carpet, ceramic tiles, and natural stone to heavy-duty commercial favorites such as terrazzo, concrete, and poured epoxy, the options seem endless. In addition to these, there are also less conventional options like cork and leather, along with imitation solutions like laminate and luxury vinyl. With such a plethora of choices, decision-makers often find themselves overwhelmed by indecision.

Despite the vastness of the flooring marketplace, it's common for us to stick with a single type of floor for each room. However, there are exceptions, as showcased by the following four projects. These projects demonstrate the strategic selection and arrangement of various flooring types within the same space, adding functionality to the floor and enhancing our interaction with the surrounding environment.

1. Traditional Clinic in Hanoi:

In a mixed-use residential complex in Hanoi, the Traditional Clinic integrates informative and educational pharmacy spaces with treatment areas. The design focuses on natural and traditional materials, with terracotta tiles and natural stone tiles forming an elegant curve on the floor. This combination not only delineates different functions but also reinforces the image of traditional medicine, fostering trust and understanding among patients.

2. Pixelated Noodle Bar:

Inspired by early-format pixelated video games, this noodle bar features white ceramic tiles reminiscent of retro gaming aesthetics. The tiles extend from the floor to the walls and furniture, creating a cohesive visual experience. By strategically cutting away tiles in seating areas, the design directs patrons on where to sit, enhancing the immersive gaming-themed atmosphere.

3. LOOM Offices in Barcelona:

The LOOM offices in Plaza Catalunya, Barcelona, draw inspiration from the Noucentisme aesthetic, reinterpreting it through composition, color, texture, and materials. Geometric drawings on the surfaces frame natural wood floors, brick walls, and vaulted Catalan ceilings, guiding users through the space while celebrating the region's architectural heritage.

4. On Performance Running Footwear Building:

Designed as a mountain trail experience, the On Performance Running Footwear building features different "neighborhoods" representing various stages of a mountain path. Each floor offers a unique theme, with earthy tones, topographic maps, forest and lake inspirations, and a sky-themed library, creating a dynamic journey reminiscent of ascending a mountain.

These projects illustrate how the strategic selection and combination of flooring materials can transform spatial experiences, enhancing functionality, aesthetics, and user engagement within architectural spaces.
